Dr Jarrod Gillbert

I am New Zealand’s leading gang expert, having conducted one of the most in depth criminal ethnographies anywhere in the world. I have subsequently led teams in conducting research on numerous and diverse topics including criminal desistance, alcohol-related harms, education uptake, dyslexia, education, and a number of programme evaluations.
I am currently leading projects examining the history of murder in New Zealand, the effectiveness of a residential alcohol and drug treatment programme, an examination of the effect that gangs have within prisons, and an examination of the government’s Transnational Organised Crime Strategy.
I am also a senior firefighter at Station 28 in Sumner, Christchurch.
